How to Build a Gable Shed Roof – 6 Simple Steps

Lets build a simple shed roof. You’ve got snow and rain are in the forecast. The Gable style roof will best protect all your structure and possessions. It has a simple construction of horizontal and vertical beams, with two sloping sides that meet in the middle. The Gable is among the easiest roof to build and one of the most common. You just need to learn how to build a gable shed roof. Well, Lets get to it.

Step 1 – Top Beams

You need four stable beams that should be placed on the top of the shed. Lets assume your shed walls are about 2-3 inches thick, your beams will need to be 4 inches thick. You need to use bolts or nails with glue to attach the beams to the top of your shed. The beams must be very stable.

Step 2 – Vertical and Horizontal Beams

In the middle of the frontal horizontal beam attach a vertical one, perpendicular to it. Repeat this on the rear horizontal beam. On the top of the front and rear vertical beams you will attach a horizontal beam that connects the two verticals.

Step 3 – Rafters

Attach diagonal rafters. The rafters will support the plywood or whatever you decide to use for coverage. Each rafter should have a diagonally cut stopper at the bottom. The stopper will rest on your top beam and ensure maximum stability. It is important to attach the rafters carefully and form strong triangles. Make sure there is a rafter on each side exactly in front of the opposite.

Step 4 – Cover

Cover the roof by attaching thick pieces of plywood or sheet iron. As an extra measure of weatherproofing and water tightness, you can also caulk between the seams of the roofing boards. This is recommended, but not required.

Step 5 – Paper

Lay down the roofing paper. The paper comes in rolls. Simply start at one corner and roll the paper from one edge to the other. Leave about 1/4-inch of paper overhanging the ends. Cut the paper and secure it. A heavy duty staple gun will do the trick. Repeat this for each strip. Be sure to overlap the paper by about an inch.

Step 6 – Shingles

Starting at the lower edge of the roof, start laying your shingles. The edge of the shingles with gaps will face the edge of the roof. Be sure that your first row of shingles overhang the roof by 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch. On the upper edge of each shingle, use roofing nails to attach it as you lay it. After you’ve completed the first row overlap it enough with the second row so that the appearance is uniform. Repeat with each additional row till you get to the top then do the same on the other side.

Cap the top ridge of the roof with overlapping shingles. Start at one end of the ridge with a single shingle, laid at an angle of 90 degrees to the run of shingles you’ve just completed. Nail it down then add another shingle, overlapping by one to two inches

That’s it!

Halogen Lighting – Your Lighting Alternative to the Traditional

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Halogen lighting is used for both automobile lights and residential home illumination. For home use, the bulbs are designed to fit typical lighting fixtures, ranging from 40 watts to 150 watts. Wow! That is a bright light. If you need a bright white light in your home for ultimate visibility, this is the light for you.

Now, you might think that since they are so bright, they will be expensive. Not true. The halogen bulb is an energy saving option that lasts up to four times the life of a regular bulb, while saving you money due to the higher lumens they emit. Available with either a white finish or clear, these bulbs have an average 3000 hours of lighting life.

Did you know that between businesses and residential customers, $37 billion is spent each and every year for lighting? Think of the savings when it comes to replacing traditional lighting with energy-saving options. Even the environment can benefit from using halogen lighting versus the traditional. This alternative lighting emits lower greenhouse gases and pollutants, which includes mercury.

Not only are halogen bulbs used for residential lighting but they are great for replacing headlights on your vehicle. They have been recommended for people who have problems seeing when driving at night. According to users who changed their lights to halogen lighting, the improvement has been wonderful. They have improved night vision. The difference in their headlights has definitely made them feel more secure when it comes to driving after dark.

One type, the clear blue halogen bulb is not only made to last six times longer than the traditional headlight but are designed to handle those bumpy roads better. Called Cool Blue, this bulb has an increased color temperature over regular halogen bulbs. Because they emit a whiter light, the improvement in vision at night is tremendously better.

Another type that is reportedly even better is the XtraVision. This bulb for headlights reportedly delivers up to 30% more light, which boosts the viewing level substantially. This results in more safety when driving on roads where wild animals are prone to be on the roadway. Deer is one safety hazard that is a real problem. Certain times of the year, they are out on the roads, not only smaller roads, but interstate highways. These animals pose a serious threat to automobiles and drivers.

That is only one benefit. With traffic increasing daily, it pays to be able to see each and every obstacle that may appear as you are driving to your destination. When it comes to bicyclists, joggers, and human error in the vehicle, you want to be prepared for anything. By increasing visibility, you are safer and those who ride with you are safer.

If you have been thinking about replacing your traditional lighting with a more energy efficient type, this may be the solution you have been waiting for. The increased visibility that this type of light provides is great. You can choose the degree of lighting you want for different areas of your home. Halogen lighting is definitely worth check out.

Track Lighting Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Track lighting is a simple way to add lighting to an entire room or to simply provide accent lighting to highlight special features such as artwork or other areas in a room that can benefit from special attention. This type of lighting is installed on a mounting track fixed to your ceiling. The track can be custom configured to fit into the area desired and involves little or no remodeling since the track is mounted on an existing surface. The only requirement is that there is a power source such as an existing ceiling junction box.

Occasionally, the power source may not be in the location where you want to place the track lighting. A simple solution is to purchase what are called L or T track adaptors (also called connectors) that are unobtrusive and blend into the track lighting layout. These adaptors permit you to feed the electric from the power source to wherever the track lighting is set up.

Once the track(s) are installed, lighting heads or lighting cans are placed in the track and positioned to provide the desired lighting. Track lighting is very flexible allowing the actual lights to be twisted or angled in such a way as to provide just the right illumination.

As you research the lighting heads or lighting cans that are available, you will find that they range from fairly small fixtures to larger spotlight type lamps. Some individuals mix the type, size and power of the lights but for the most part, a uniform, identical set of fixtures will provide a more pleasing and professional looking layout.

Versatility is the key to considering track lighting. You may find a small area that doesn’t benefit from ambient lighting or other types of lighting such as table lamps, etc. This is often the case in hallways or other narrow, interior areas. A simple track lighting layout with just a few fixtures can provide just the right amount of lighting for these areas. Often set up on dimmer switches, track lighting can be adjusted to just the right level of intensity to get the job done. Again, track lighting is often an ideal option to highlight a piece of sculpture or other artwork that you would like to show off. You can reserve the use of this application to times when you have company over, leaving the special purpose track lighting off at other times.

Because of the types of fixtures available, track lighting can provide a feeling of warmth and intimacy in both small and larger areas of your home.

There are a number of other areas in the home where track lighting might be an appropriate addition. The bathroom is typically an area that has little ambient or natural light. A small strip of track lighting can be added near the shower. This will not only provide needed light in this area but will also create the illusion of the area being larger. Track lighting also works well above the bathroom mirror as an alternative to lights actually installed on or next to the mirror. The bathroom can provide a number of possibilities to highlighting task areas other than those mentioned above.

The kitchen and eating areas are often appropriate locations to install track lighting. If you have an island in the kitchen, a small strip of track lights will do a nice job of illuminating this food preparation area. Some kitchens feature small counter-top eating areas that also lend themselves to track lighting.

Flexible track lighting is a fairly recent innovation that permits even greater flexibility than traditional track lighting. While many people don’t consider this type of lighting as attractive or stylish as traditional track lighting, it does provide an option that lets you install flexible lighting with a minimum of work. The basic idea with flexible track lighting is that the wiring is encased in flexible material (such as tubing) rather than on an inflexible rod. This permits this type of lighting to be used in a variety of ways and the lighter weight material often makes this a less expensive alternative than standard, rod type track lighting.

Flexible track lighting also allows more artistic flexibility. Artistic designs are possible in dimly lit areas and simple, but elegant highlights are possible in nearly any room in the house.

Homemade Airsoft RPG-7 Style 40mm Grenade Launcher (Part 2)

Here with another aderonn airsoft review. This is Part 2 of my review of the airsoft grenade launcher i made. This launcher uses the same idea as my other tactical grenade launcher, with the caulking gun as the base firing mechanism, but in the form of an rpg-7. This design is 100% my idea, as was the other grenade launcher. I made it out of PVC pipe and various PVC fittings along with a caulking gun and some other materials. I hope you enjoy this video and stay tuned for a how to video on this airsoft weapon.

LED Light Bulbs as Accent Lighting

Image : http://www.flickr.com

LED lighting is becoming a hot commodity in the interior design world. Since it is energy efficient and cheap to power, it allows interior designers to use colored light in similar ways as they would paint. Additionally, with LED technology becoming more and more popular, there are many funky home decor items that can also be added to a room, including lighting fixtures, mirrors, and alarm clocks, not to mention bathtubs, water faucets, and tables.

One incredibly easy area to use LED light bulbs to replace existing accent lighting is in display cabinets, behind shelves, or under kitchen cabinets. Traditional lighting in these areas is not only inefficient and expensive, it also can get extremely hot which contributes to risk of fire and also accidental burns. Replacing these lights with new lighting technology is relatively simple and can be an excellent way to lower costs and increase safety.

Because LED light bulbs give off a neon type effect, as well as light that is very directed, they can be used to provide both an intimate glow or a shock of color. Nightclubs often use LED technology to create the subtle glows and changing colors that create such a mood, and with LED technology becoming more accessible and inexpensive, you can create this type of mood in your own home. Dark, moody rooms can be lit with a glow of blue light or dramatic light columns shooting up to the ceiling from wall-mounted lamps. Light from LEDs can be projected directly onto walls, creating palettes of color. Try creating a soft glow under a glass table or, if you have a bar, under the counter. LED lighting is particularly well suited to rooms of a modern design that are stripped down. Glass is an excellent feature to use as well.

LED light bulbs and LED auto light bulbs are friendly to the environment and can help you save money.

Wall Lighting – Come Out of the Darkness

Image : http://www.flickr.com

What would have become of man without lighting? Wall lighting illuminated the night and profoundly changed human existence. Wall lighting creates a comfortable living space whether it’s for decoration or ambiance. It helps create magic and fantasy, for otherwise there would just be a dark shadowed space.

It has been rumored that in BC people would take a rock and cover the rock with moss. They would then soak the rock with animal fat and ignite. For control, wicks were later introduced…

From history we are aware that in the 1700′s most homes or plantations used either candle fixtures or candelabras. They also carried candle sticks and candle lanterns. Then in the early 1800′s oil lanterns were used. Most of these fixtures were made from tin, iron or wood. These lanterns were all hand made and some looked like the lighting fixtures we have today. Around 1860 kerosene oil and gas lighted many of these fixtures.

Then in 1879 the greatest invention of all came to be. This was the year that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. This helped mold cultures for the Art Deco Era. Gas/electric combination lighting was used. Electric lighting was less expensive and less dangerous then gas. These fixtures were abundant in people’s homes and were usually hung by a chain.

Electricity kept dropping in price until 1960. The equipment that generated the electricity began to climb and rise. This pushed up the utility bills and the average person started to struggle. People started to turn off their lights, they installed dimmers, timers, and sensors.

More and more people are starting to change to compact florescent lights. The downside is the color has less intense quality and a slower start up time. The latest is the LED. It is quick to start and the quality is exceptional.

Interior lighting refers to all lights within a building that is not exposed to the elements. Exterior lighting is the reverse. This lighting is outdoors and is exposed to the elements.

There are traditional, modern, and decorative style wall lights. You can have lighting fixtures from your wall, floor, table and ceiling.

There are also many different kinds of wall fixtures. There are adjustable, hanging, lanterns, torch, lamp, vanity lights, and wall sconces.

Wall mounted lighting fixtures extend from the wall between 4 and 10 inches. An adjustable fixture has an up light or down light with a swing arm The body of a hanging fixture hangs from a stem that is extended outwards from a wall. A wall lamp is any fixture that has a shade and is a similar style to a table lamp. The lights around or above a mirror are known as vanity lights. The wall sconce is a wall mounted fixture that only has one light.

You can find all these styles and types to fit any budget. There are many places to find all the unique and different varieties. Please make certain whatever you choose reflects your personality and the overall theme of your home.
